Welcome to Volume 5 of my poetry. This is a departure from the first 4 volumes, in that I am only including poems from 2014 through April of 2016. So everything you read is fresh and new. "Word Tapestries", "My Words", and "Poetry is Not #3" discuss my views on poetry itself. "Private Conversation With Myself" is as personal a look at who I am as I have ever attempted. "Sorrow" and "I Found Happiness" are the Yin and Yang of life. Of course there is the usual social commentary like "Martians, Isis, and God" and love poems like "Melting Point of Love". Enjoy the read, and contact me at jack.tomkovick@gmail.com, if you want a more intimate discussion. peace and joy, Jack. P.S. There are religious poems too, like "Only Small Things", about Mother Teresa's life. Finally, this volume ends with "Because Life Is So Hard", a poem about afterlife, heaven, and hope.

Even though July 4th has past, there's still firework to be found in Jack Tomkovick's new volume of poems, THE NEW STUFF (A Skewed View): Selected Poems 2014-2016. Returning readers already know Mr. Tomkovick' s way with words is legion, his unerring precision: cowboy sllinging the rope expertly around the calf's neck each time out of the box; or, skipping stone after stone across a pond's sparkling water. His latest volume of poems offer us new natural wonders of his sight and insight.

"Artist, Weaver, Woodcutter" has been the poem that struck me unexpectedly deeply:
--------------------------------------------------------
'We can hide our grief
In bright oils on canvas
Iridescent orange sunrises
Hot pink sunsets over coastal waters ...

We can bury our grief
Neath jams and preserves
Cookies and cakes given freely
To those "less fortunate."

We can chop down our grief
To manageable size ...

We can drown our grief
In oceans of words ..."

[and] ... emerge again
Like human monarchs from our cocoon."
--------------------------------------------------------

We embark with the poet on his exhilarating discovery of the Fountain of Poetry. He gives his readers so much sunshine per square inch (ecstatic and "deep-sworn vows" of love) that serve as his cushion against "the agony of defeat."

He examines the political minefields we live in with such poems as "Afghanistan Commentary":
"It is a hard edged land
With hard edged men and women
Upon it. Tajiks and Pashtuns
It is a land of sand
And grit that wears upon you
Like fine carborundum..."

These poems prick the emotions of our very human condition. Through Mr. Tomkovick's eyes we see ourselves often blinded by our self-interest---but never beaten, the Spirit's abiding light coming to the rescue,
"And you can forgive yourself
All the what ifs and might have beens..."

The life-force depicted in "Poetry is not #3" is stunning. It becomes evident that he is inviting you and me, poem by poem, to join his conversation. So read the poems: "Sorrow," "Only Small Things," "Next Train to Heaven" (these spiritual flashes come from his same energy that always intends to surprise and dismay us).

If you only read one poem, read this one: "Astounding." But I warn you, he can barely wait to share his next poem with you, and his next. You'll get "hooked on a feeling" and keep reading.

THE NEW STUFF A Skewed View Selected Poems 20142016 The Long Strange Journey Volume 5 Jack Tomkovick 9781523408252 Books Reviews

Those familiar with 'Lorem ipsum' may know that it is a collection nonsense Latin words. It's basically bits of Cicero scrambled up until they no longer makes any sense. That is how the world seems at times; bits of love and hate, thanksgiving and sadness, anger and rejoicing, all mixed up until none of it makes any sense. Luckily there are people like Jack out there trying to make sense of it all, rearranging the puzzle pieces to help us get back to the bigger picture. I found it interesting that the first line of 'Word Tapestries', the first poem in this collection, expressed a similar sentiment

"Poems do not exist
As mere fragments in space
Of love, lust, sorrow, or joy"

Of course, your view of the world may vary, as may your take on that opening line. Thankfully Jack has a knack for speaking to multiple audiences and varied backgrounds. This is another great collection from Jack, with the bonus being that it's focused on his works from the past two years. Highly recommended.
I am not surprised that Jack’s poetry in this volume, “THE NEW STUFF (A Skewed View), is fresh and touching because the Jack I know is able to share his thoughts and feelings generously in person as well. Many of his poems like “Martians, Isis and God” bring together his past as a civics teacher and his present faith as I observe him at my church. And, there are many other verses which call on his observations and knowledge of the state of our world. His wisdom is evident. Many of these are inspired by his deep faith. Jack writes and speaks from the heart – always from the heart. The poems in this volume show what we have to look forward to if these are the most recent. Try to get to a reading.
Given that these poems are recent, there is a greater proportion of appreciation of the gifts of loving family and friends, but the anger against injustice is still there. "Only Small Things" and "Giving Thanks" resonated the most with me. Read and enjoy---
